DNS Made Easy Suffers from DDOS Attack
By Nikki Patel
(TCP IP World) DNS has restored services and mended customer relationship since being victim to a denial of service attack at a 50Gbps.
It still remains unclear who the hacking culprits are and for what reason they interfered with DNS Made Easy’s System. One forecasted reason is that hackers with a possible grudge with the DNS Made Easy Website may have hired a botnet to flood DNS Made Easy with endless and worthless traffic.
Lasting up to eight hours, the company said that 1.5 hours of actual downtime was experienced at the time of the attack.
Just after the first sign of attack carriers such as Level3, Tata, Tinet, GlobalCrossing, and Deutsche Telekom supported DNS Made Easy to block the hackers. The size of the attack was so large that it immediately infested the core of the network with junky traffic.
DNS Made Easy is known for its specialization in global IP Anycast enterprise DNS services thus it would not be expected that such an attack would be pointed towards the company. Many network security companies including The SANS Institute’s Internet Storm Center are eager to learn more about this attack and its cause.
According to a study done by DDos mitigation experts , the most forceful attacks recorded in 2009 hit 49Gbps. Experts stated that the most common attacks range from 1-4 Gbps.

I’m a DNS Made Easy subscriber; have been for 4+ years. Great service and support at an affordable price. And although I’m certainly not their biggest customer, I do have 35 or so domains registered in my portal where I handle DNS.
DME should be commended for how they’ve handled this attack. In my book I give them a 10+ rating for their handling both during and after. Shortly after the attack I received an email that in no uncertain terms covered what they knew at that point of what happened and what was done to recover and stabilize their systems. Very professional and straight forward…no whining or crying.
Some would suggest that DME could lose customers because of circumstances caused by malicious miscreants unleashing an overwhelming flood against their services. I’d like to ask: could any company out there have done a better job of recovery in such a short period of time? Who?
DME Rocks! Solid on offering, service and support. I’ll stick with the winners!
